RUNNER UP
Make a great-looking, custom-sized
runner for a fraction of the cost
of buying one. Sew small,
inexpensive cotton rugs together
and reinforce the seams with twill
tape. Or use the same technique to
make an area rug, joining both the
long and short sides of the rugs.

STEP-BY-STEP
1. Cut the tassels off the rugs
where they will be joined.
2.
Using a sewing machine and
heavy-gauge thread, sew the short
ends of the rugs together with
right sides facing each other.
3.
Press seams open with an iron.
4.
Cut i ’/ 2-inch-wide cotton tape
(at fabric stores) to width of rug.
5.
On the back of the rug, center
tape over the seam. Sew both long
edges of tape to the rug. Repeat
steps 4 and 5 for remaining seams.
LAUNDERING TIP
To keep rug
dyes from running, wash rug in
cold, add ’4 cup vinegar to wash
water, and hang to dry.
